In Indiana, the month of May means one thing: the Indianapolis 500.
For many Hoosiers, the race is more than a sporting event. It’s a tradition that connects families, friends, and generations through shared experiences at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
That tradition is especially meaningful for White’s Realty agent Patrick Tafelski, whose connection to the Indy 500 goes back more than four decades.

More Than 40 Years at the Indianapolis 500
The 2026 Indianapolis 500 will mark Patrick’s 43rd consecutive year purchasing tickets to the race.
Patrick attended his first Indy 500 in 1984 after spending years listening to the race on the radio with family members.
“Back then, the race wasn’t televised live in Indiana,” Patrick said. “Listening to the radio was the only way to follow the race.”
Patrick remembers becoming fully invested in the event during the 1970s, especially after attending time trials in 1983. After experiencing the Speedway in person for the first time in 1984, he knew attending the race would become a lifelong tradition.
“To this day, I can still vividly remember that first lap,” Patrick said. “The power and speed of the cars in person is something television can never fully capture.”
Over the years, Patrick has experienced nearly every type of race-day scenario imaginable:
- Overnight campouts near the Speedway
- Rain delays and postponed races
- Historic finishes
- Severe weather after the race
- Multiple generations of drivers and fans
Today, Patrick and his group leave Union County around 3:45 a.m. on race morning, caravan to Indianapolis, tailgate together, and head into the Speedway before the green flag.

Liberty, Indiana’s Connection to the Speedway
Patrick serves buyers and sellers throughout Union County and Liberty, Indiana — a community with a unique connection to Indianapolis Motor Speedway history.
Liberty is the hometown of Bob Jenkins, the legendary motorsports broadcaster known for being one of the voices of the Indianapolis 500 for decades.
Jenkins became one of the most respected figures in racing media through his work with the IMS Radio Network, ESPN, and NBC Sports. Today, Liberty honors his legacy with a mural recognizing his contributions to motorsports broadcasting.
For many local residents, the connection between Liberty and the Indianapolis 500 remains a point of pride.

Passing the Tradition to the Next Generation
For White’s Realty owner, Jonathan White, the Indy tradition now centers around sharing the experience with his son, Rustan.
Their first trip to the Speedway together happened in 2018 when Rustan was just three years old.
“It honestly wasn’t something we planned,” Jonathan said. “My wife and daughter were away at an event, and I just thought maybe Rustan and I should go to the track today.”
That trip quickly became an annual tradition.
“We make it a point to get to the track together every May,” Jonathan said. “It’s become a non-negotiable - we will find a way to be there together in May.”
Over the years, the trips have included:
- Bump Day
- Carb Day
- The Indy Grand Prix
- Tailgating with friends and family
- Walking through the infield and garage areas
One of Jonathan’s favorite traditions is taking a yearly photo with Rustan in front of the Pagoda at the Speedway.

Friendship, Family, and Indiana Tradition
The tradition has continued to grow beyond just one family.
Jonathan now attends events at the Speedway with five friends from high school — and many of their sons attend as well.
What started as a group of friends attending races together has evolved into a multi-generational tradition shared between parents and children.
For Rustan, some of the best parts of race weekend have little to do with the race itself.
“My favorite part is just the friends and the experience,” he said.
When asked recently what he enjoys most, Rustan gave another simple answer:
“The ride there with my friends.”
Rustan’s favorite driver is Pato O’Ward and the No. 5 McLaren Chevrolet team.

A Tradition That Reflects Indiana
The Indianapolis 500 has always been about more than racing in Indiana.
For many Hoosier families, it represents:
- Tradition
- Family
- Friendship
- Community
- Pride in the state of Indiana
At White’s Realty, those same values continue to shape the company today.
