Much of a Real Estate Agent's life is spent in the car. This is one reason I only have an Indiana Real Estate License; I would rather explore country roads than be packed on city streets. My favorite sightings on these Indiana country drives are the big birds.
While growing up in Franklin County, Indiana, my family would play "The Hawk Game". Redtailed and Red-shouldered hawks were each worth a point, Osprey-2 pts, and Bald Eagles-3pts. Bald Eagle sightings were rare. Now they are prevalent. I see at least one Baldy a week. Last month, while driving from Connersville to Laurel on IN-121, I saw 6 in one day, flying above the Whitewater River, spying their winter fishing holes.
Great Blue Herons are North America's largest waterbirds and among the most common. Commonality is not wasted on me. I am awestruck every time a "Great Blue" takes flight. The East and the West forks of the Whitewater River converge just south of Brookville, Indiana, and Franklin County is also home to Brookville Reservoir and many creeks and streams. I am, thankfully, awestruck often.
Today, I did see something new.
Great Blue Herons nest in a colony called a "rookery". I know of two rookeries in Franklin County on US 52, both between Brookville and Harrison, Ohio. Today, the rookery just south of Brookville and east of US 52 at Orschell's Bend was a buzz. There were at least 20 Great Blue Herons flying above the tillable field, diving every which way. There was a Bald Eagle flying right in the middle of the ruckus. Great Blue Heron's have such long beaks, I would not have wanted to be the Baldy.
